DashJam is built so that your recordings stay yours. This policy explains what the app accesses, where it is stored, and what is (and isn't) shared.
The short version
Nothing you record, and nothing about where you record it, leaves your device. DashJam has no servers, no account system, and no analytics. A recording only leaves your iPhone if you choose to share or export it.
What DashJam accesses
- Microphone. DashJam needs the microphone to record your session. iOS asks for your permission the first time you start a session. Audio is written only to storage on your own device.
- Background audio. So a session keeps running while you play, DashJam continues recording when it is in the background. It records only while a session is active, and stops when you end the session.
- Location — only if you use Places. Places is an optional feature: you save a spot such as your rehearsal room, and DashJam reminds you to start a recording when you arrive, or to save one when you leave. It works by asking iOS to watch a circular region around that spot, which needs location access — including in the background, since the whole point is that the reminder reaches you while the app is closed. iOS asks for your permission the first time you switch on a Place reminder, and never before. The places you save, and the coordinates behind them, are stored on your device and are never transmitted. If you don't use Places, DashJam never asks for your location at all.
- Notifications — only if you use them. The Places reminders and the “jam saved” confirmation are delivered as notifications. iOS asks for permission when you enable the first of them.
DashJam does not request or use your contacts, photos, calendar, health data, or advertising identifiers.
What is stored, and where
- The rolling buffer (the most recent minutes of audio) is held in the app's private cache directory on your device. iOS may evict it to reclaim space.
- Saved jams are stored as
.m4aaudio files in the app's documents folder on your device. They are visible to you in the iOS Files app under DashJam. - Places (the name, coordinates, and radius of each spot you save, and which reminders you switched on) are stored locally in the app's own storage.
- Settings (such as your language preference) are stored locally in the app's own preferences.
All of the above lives on your device. None of it is transmitted to us or to any third party.
What we collect
Nothing. DashJam does not collect, transmit, or sell any personal data. There is no tracking, no advertising identifiers, and no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs in the app.
Purchases
There are none. DashJam has no in-app purchases, no subscription, and no paid tier, so no payment data of any kind reaches the app — or us.
Sharing and exporting
You are always in control of when a recording leaves your device. Using the share sheet, the Files app, AirDrop, Messages, or any other destination you pick sends that file to wherever you direct it. Once you share a file with another app or service, that file is handled according to that destination's terms — which are outside DashJam's control.
Your rights
Because DashJam holds no data about you on any server, there is nothing for us to disclose, correct, export, or erase on request — the GDPR rights of access, rectification, erasure, and portability have no data to act on here. Everything the app stores is on your own device: deleting a jam in the Library, deleting a Place, or deleting the app removes it. There is no backup of it anywhere else.
Children's privacy
DashJam does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children. It collects no data at all.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the “Last updated” date above will change with it.
