How DashJam works
- Tap Start session — DashJam begins listening right away.
- Keep playing. The app holds the most recent 30 minutes of audio in a rolling buffer.
- When something good happens, tap Save Jam and drag the handles on the live waveform to pick exactly the stretch you want, then confirm.
- Saved jams land in your Library, where you can play them back, rename them, and export them. They also appear in the iOS Files app under DashJam.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account?
No. There's no sign-in. DashJam works entirely on your device.
Where do my recordings go?
Onto your iPhone, and nowhere else. Saved jams are .m4a files in DashJam's folder in the Files app. Nothing is uploaded.
Why does DashJam need the microphone?
To record your session. Audio stays on your device.
Does it record in the background?
Yes — while a session is active, recording continues when the app is in the background, so you don't have to keep it on screen. It stops when you end the session.
How far back can I save?
As far back as your rolling buffer reaches — anywhere from 10 to 60 minutes, adjustable in Settings.
My session was recording but I closed the app — did I lose it?
The rolling buffer is crash-safe and is restored when you reopen the app, as long as iOS hasn't evicted the cache to reclaim storage.
How do I get my recording off the phone?
Open the jam in your Library (or find it in the Files app under DashJam) and use the share sheet — AirDrop, Messages, email, or any destination you like.
Which languages are supported?
English and German. You can override the language in Settings → Language.
What does it cost?
Nothing. DashJam is free and every feature is included: the 10–60 minute rolling buffer, automatic jam detection, trimming saved jams, Places reminders, and the audio quality and mono controls. There are no in-app purchases, no subscription, and no paid tier.
I used to pay for DashJam Pro. What happens now?
Everything you were paying for is now free for everyone, so there is nothing left to subscribe to. If you still have an active DashJam subscription, cancel it so it doesn't renew: Settings app → your name → Subscriptions → DashJam → Cancel Subscription. You keep every feature after cancelling — they are no longer tied to a purchase.
I bought the Lifetime unlock.
It cost you once and it kept its promise — every feature it unlocked is still there, and now it's there for everyone. Nothing to cancel, nothing to restore.
Can I get a refund for the time I already paid?
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us: reportaproblem.apple.com. If it doesn't go your way there, write to info@erigrus.de and we'll see what we can do.
Places and location
Places is the only part of DashJam that uses your location, and it only asks when you switch a Place reminder on. It watches a circle around a spot you saved so it can remind you to start or save a recording there — which needs background location, because the reminder has to reach you while the app is closed. The places and coordinates stay on your device and are never transmitted. If you don't use Places, DashJam never asks for your location.
Privacy
Audio never leaves your device unless you share or export it. See the Privacy Policy for details.
